Update on Congress

Price_T_2010.jpg
Thomas E. Price, M.D.
Georgia 6th District Congressman

By Sally Wyeth, eNews writer
Next week, Georgia’s 6th District Congressman Thomas E. Price, M.D. will update the Sandy Springs Rotary Club on Congress. Price was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in November 2004. Georgia’s 6th District includes portions of Cherokee, Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton counties which includes the City of Sandy Springs, Georgia. Price, who has won three congressional elections, previously served four terms in the Georgia State Senate. In 2002, Price became the first Republican Majority Leader in the history of the Georgia Senate.

Price serves on the Financial Services Committee as well as the Committee on Education and Labor, in which he is the Ranking Republican Member on the Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee. According to his official website, Price advocates patient-centered health care reform, the FairTax and an All-You-Can-Create Energy Plan. Price was elected Chairman of the House Republican Study Committee (RSC) during the 111th Congress.

Price received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan and completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Emory University. For almost 20 years, Price maintained a private medical practice. He then returned to Emory University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor. Price was also Medical Director of the Orthopedic Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Price is a past President of the Roswell Rotary Club and has served on Boards of the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Orchestra Atlanta, the Arthritis Foundation, and the North Metro YMCA. Official Visit of Rotary International’s District 6900:
2010-2011 District Governor Casey Farmer

Sally Wyeth, eNews Writer
DGFarmer_C_Podium.jpgThe Rotary Club of Sandy Springs and its Board of Directors welcomed District Governor Casey Farmer last Monday as he made his official visit to the club, marking his 27th visit to a District 6900 Rotary Club since taking office. Accompanying District Governor Casey was Assistant District Governor Bill Compton.

Before lunch, District Governor Casey attended the Sandy Springs Rotary Club’s Board of Directors meeting where he reviewed our club’s plans for the year and offered his support. Sandy Springs Rotary Club members informally greeted District Governor Farmer and his wife, Missy, the day before at a Sunday afternoon party held in their honor at the home of Tom and Ellen Ungashick.

In his address to Sandy Springs Rotarians and guests, District Governor Casey explained Rotary International President’s Ray Klinginsmith’s focus for Rotary: youth, polio, and service programs within the six areas of focus. “Bigger, Better and Bolder Rotary Clubs” best summed up his end goal. District Governor Casey acknowledged that our own District 6900 is an exceptional Rotary district, noting that DGvisit2010_1072-1.jpgwhen Rotary International did not make matching grants last year due to the effects of the worldwide recession, District 6900 Rotary clubs were able to complete 31 matching grants having a $688,000 value because of the district’s strong history of giving. District Governor Casey then recognized Sandy Springs Rotary Club as an exceptional club for its annual giving levels, strong programs and active membership.

District 6900 also leads in its giving to Polio Plus in the quest to meet the matching grant challenge from the Gates Foundation and is one of the 100 Districts globally chosen to participate in the “Future Vision” 3-year pilot program. A revised Rotary International strategic plan hones objectives to the support of clubs, expansion of humanitarian services and enhancement of the Rotary brand and image.

Rotarians must focus on the health of their own Rotary Clubs during the current economic recession which has challenged clubs’ membership levels, especially clubs in rural regions. District Governor Casey stressed that value exists for Rotarians and it is the job of each club to show the value of membership in Rotary to its members.

callaway-gardens-flowers.jpgDistrict Governor Casey then reminded us that District 6900 has much to look forward to in the upcoming year and the future. The District Conference will be held in Calloway Gardens, which has over 900 rooms blocked for the event. There will be lots of Family of Rotary opportunities for fun. The 2011 Rotary International Convention will be held May 21-25 in New Orleans, a short distance away from District 6900 clubs, and he encouraged our attendance. In 2017, Atlanta will host the Rotary International Convention at which 30,000-45,000 Rotarians are expected to attend and which will mark the 100th year of the Rotary Foundation.

RffaLogo.jpgIn conclusion, District Governor Casey encouraged those in Rotary to follow their passions and take an idea forward. He pointed to local Rotarian Marion Bunch and her goal to prevent AIDS. That one Rotarian’s idea has transformed into a Rotary International worldwide project, with the initial steam provided by one Rotarian who had one idea and the passion to carry it forward.  For more information and links to district in international conference registration, go to the District 6900 website at http://www.rotarydistrict6900.org/

with District Governor Casey Farmer and Missy Farmer

By Linda Randolph, eNews Contributor with photographs from various club members
A photo gallery of Sandy Springs Rotarians and their guests show how we enjoyed a comfortable afternoon with District Governor Casey Farmer and his wife, Missy, on Sunday, August 15th at the lovely home of Ellen and Tom Ungashick. We have  a full schedule of future social events. Check the captions here and the calendar for the complete list.  Sandy Spring Rotarians work and play with a 25% to 75% work to play ratio. We call work distributing dictionaries and thesauruses to Sandy Springs public school children, so how much work is that?

Our Rotary Tent at Sandy Springs Festival will Highlight Shelter Boxes

Excerpts from article on Shelter Box.org
with edits by Robert Wilson
The nation of Pakistan is in the midst of a devastating flood and Rotary Club’s around the world are responding to the needs of the thousands who have lost their homes and possessions.  Brazil has suffered as well.

The Shelter Boxes program has become an important first-response initiative thanks to the efforts of Tom Henderson and the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall, England. The Club adopted the Shelter Box program as their millennium project in 2000. Today it has grown internationally to become a major component of world-wide disaster relief.

The Sandy Springs Rotary Club will be highlighting the Shelter Box program during the upcoming Sandy Springs Heritage Festival. A shelter tent, and other Box contents, will be on display so that the community can see first-hand how a Shelter Box can help sustain a family in need.

The Festival is being held September 25 and 26th. Any club members wishing to volunteer are encouraged to contact Robert Wilson or phone 404-256-4625.
