Past Program
Irene Schweiger and the mission of the Sandy Springs Education Force

Irene Schweitzer, Executive Director of the Sandy Springs Education Force spoke to our club this past Monday, August 9th.

The mission of the SSEF is to create targeted programs that educate, inspire and prepare public school students in Sandy Springs for a competitive world. They do this through several programs which include, literacy, mentoring and tutoring after school, and STEAM initiatives.

They have a summer book club that enrolled 92 students from Dunwoody Springs and Ison Springs Elementary schools. They even had pizza parties where they awarded prizes. They also have a mini libraries program that provides at-risk students with immediate, home-based access to high quality books that they can read and keep.

The SSEF has a Link with a Leader Program which is designed to provide targeted students an opportunity to meet and learn about the world outside of school from members of the business community.

Each February, North Springs and Riverwood Charter High Schools identify disadvantaged students who are on target to graduate but do not have any post-secondary plans. Trained volunteers present options and assist students with college applications.

The After School All Stars program takes place five days per week for two hours a day at Sandy Springs Charter Middle School. It incorporates academic remediation and enrichment. The school provides transportation as 97% of the students in the program are economically disadvantaged. This program serves 150 students annually.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM Initiatives) are designed to showcase the eleven Sandy Springs public schools and the community. Over 1800 middle and high school students attend this event and can interact with exhibitors.

SSEF designs and implements free supplemental programs to engage, support and encourage our economically disadvantaged public-school students.

The Rotary Club of Sandy Springs applauds and supports Irene and the Sandy Springs Education Force.
