Last Week at Rotary
Ashley Steele Spreads the word about the work of the American Red Cross

On Monday, March 11th, Ashley Steele visited the club and provided a broad overview of the American Red Cross. Ashley is a Regional Philanthropy Officer whose responsibilities range over a myriad of tasks involving communicating awareness all the way down to being on-scene quickly after a disaster.

She began her presentation with a question: “What do you think of when you’re asked about the American Red Cross?” Not surprisingly most of us responded by saying; “Blood drives!” With an accompanying slide show she pointed out just how far beyond blood collection and emergency services the Red Cross goes.

She spoke on several topics such as recent disaster services, the urgent need for my blood donors and even on preparedness and safety. Relating to safety, one project that she spoke of is called “Sound the Alarm”. All 50 states including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are included in this wide spread attempt to install over 100,000 free smoke alarms in more than 100 at-risk communities. Near us, on May 11th she asked for volunteers to help distribute the smoke alarms to families in the Conyers area.
You can search volunteer events around the local areas here. Log on and sign up. …it is the Rotarian thing to do.

Another project she spoke proudly of was the “Pillowcase Project”. This program features interactive lessons focused on home fire prevention and safety and other potential hazards like tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods. The target audience is 3rd to 5th graders and designed to encourage emergency preparedness. The students learn about the science of an emergency and how best to prepare. They practice what to do if a disaster strikes and how to cope with related fear and stress. They also share information and skills they have learned with their family so everyone in the household knows what to do.

Ashley Steele seen here with Fred Ferrand, President of the Sandy Springs Rotary Club for 2018-19.

The Sandy Springs Rotary Club would like to thank Ashley for speaking to us and for all of her work that she does for the community through the American Red Cross.
