Randdolph G. Russell teaches American History
On Monday,July 8th, 2019, Randolph Russell, author of American History in no time addressed the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs.
Mr. Russell stressed the importance of our history and that it should be a larger part of the curriculum in our schools. He voiced a fear that we may be loosing control of our future because we are not remembering our past. Feeling an urgent need for a quick refresher on American history, he structured his book to be a concise and captivating look at the events of our past.
Below is a nearly complete excerpt from the introduction of his book. It gives an overview of his book and reveals several answers to questions that he posed in the earliest moments of his speech.

The history of America is an amazing story but all too unfamiliar. American History in No Time is the quickest and easiest way to learn the basics. It is also the perfect refresher. In just a few hours you will know the key events, people, places, and principles from pre-Columbian times to the present. This overview concentrates on that part of North America that became the United States.
On the next page you will find a timeline of the last 500 years. Six key events are already plotted. As you can see, the Civil War is closer to us in time than the beginning of Jamestown was to the Founders of the United States. A map showing the territorial expansion of the U.S. and a world map are also provided. As you progress through the book, refer back to the timeline and the maps to enhance your perspective.
Learning about the past is an enriching experience. Wherever you live or wherever you go in this country, people have lived there or passed that way for centuries, if not millennia. That realization fosters curiosity about the way things used to be and what the people were like.
One of the purposes of this book is to instill a sense of history and a desire to know more. If that is achieved, you will want to stop at more of the historical markers you see along the roadways. Your vacation to Disney World in Orlando will include a side trip to St. Augustine, an early colonial outpost of Spain and the oldest European settlement in the continental United States, just two hours away. After visiting the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, you will head 10 miles east to Cahokia and climb to the top of Monks Mound, an ancient Native American earthen pyramid with a larger footprint than any pyramid in Egypt. If you go to the French Quarter in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, you will stop at the comer of St. Louis and Chartres streets, where slaves were auctioned before the Civil War. If you travel to Las Vegas, you will take the time to visit an old mining town nearby called Rhyolite, now a ghost town. And while in New York City, after seeing a show on Broadway or at Madison Square Garden, you will want to walk down Wall Street, the financial center of the country, and stand next to the statue of George Washington, on the spot where he took the oath of office in 1789 as the first president of the United States.
"The past is never dead. It's not even past." So wrote William Faulkner. History is all around us. We are connected to the past, and it provides an unlimited supply of fascinating stories. Looking back gives us a better perspective of our place in the world, helps us recognize how valuable our time is, makes us appreciate the struggles and successes of those who preceded us, and encourages us to make our own contributions to the country.
